Basically, Swagbucks is a search service that pays you virtual "bucks" for doing your regular internet searching. But, instead of Google getting all the profits when you search, Swagbucks is a way to pay yourself for something you do anyway. Instead of searching from Google, type your search into the Swagbucks searchbar (either on their site or onto the downloadable toolbar)--the search results are from Google and Ask.com

You will be periodically awarded Swagbucks when you do a search, which will accrue until you redeem them for a prize or gift card. You can get music, TV shows (entire seasons), books, video games, electronics, and my favorite--gift cards--to places such as Starbucks, Target, Amazon.com, Macy's and Barnes and Noble. I've mentioned before that we are saving up for Amazon cards to do our Christmas shopping, so when December rolls in, we'll be able to purchase a few things without breaking the (already fragile) budget!
