12 Days of Christmas Giveaway--Sound of Music Original Cast Recording

The hills are alive...

If you are like me, you will instantly associate those words with The Sound of Music--which happens to be my all-time FAVORITE musical and movie.

I was fortunate to be able to live in Austria for a semester while in college, and our campus was in a beautiful restored Carthusian Monastery in the foothills of the Austrian Alps.  Here's a photo.  Beautiful, isn't it?

While there and ever since, I have been fascinated by the true story of Maria and the Von Trapps' escape from Nazi rule, all of which is captured in the musical (and later the film) The Sound of Music.

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the original cast recording of The Sound of Music by Rodgers and Hammerstein, which premiered on Broadway in 1959.  It was their final collaboration, and starred Mary Martin as Maria.  Audiences fell in love with the story and the very memorable songs, such as "My Favorite Things", "Edelweiss", and "Do-Re-Mi".

I, too, love the songs and the story--it is a fantastic mix of romance, drama, and playful whimsy. Playing the music and singing along always put me in a good mood and makes me smile. The 50th Anniversary Edition includes some great bonus tracks, too, that you may not have heard before.

If you know a Sound of Music devotee (or ARE, like me!), consider also purchasing The Sound of Music: A Classic Collectible Pop-Up (Hardcover).  This book fascinates younger kids, and will be admired by older children and adults--there are 6  large and rather intricate pop-ups, as well as several smaller pop-ups within each fold-out page of the story.  The large pop-ups, especially, are beautiful--like the one of Maria walking down the aisle of the huge, pillared church to marry Capt. Von Trapp. I'm utterly amazed at the 3-D images that can be created purely from heavy-weight paper.

Download this Sing-Along Guide  that correlates with  the pop-up book and the CD.  It has the same gentle color scheme, and it's filled with games, puzzles, and activities that children can do while you read them the pop-up book and listen to the music. There are even some lyrics included so the kids (or, ahem--YOU!) can sing along.

If you love all things The Sound of Music, too, you're in luck. One reader will win a copy of the The Sound of Music: 50th Anniversary Special Edition!
