It's not every day that a new Catholic concordance debuts, so it's an extra special pleasure to have the opportunity from The Catholic Company to write a review for one.
This particular concordance is for the excellent Revised Standard Version Catholic edition of the Bible, and the concordance begins with a forward by none other than Dr. Scott Hahn. Hahn’s foreword is a sparkling addition to the volume that makes you want to start studying the Bible immediately, and to get to know it so well that you become yourself a living, breathing concordance.
And that’s just what a concordance is for: to know and understand the Bible well. That is to say, a concordance is a book that helps you locate, compare, correlate and juxtapose passages of Scripture so that they illumine and interpret one another.
The concordance is as compact as it can realistically be—I would like slightly larger print, but I know this might make the book unwieldy. It’s easy to use, and has all the wonderful elements of a great concordance: number of times a word is used in the entire Bible, where the word is located and how it is used in a particular sentence. There are very handy markers on the side of the pages to make it easy to skip from, say, the “g” section to the “t” section.
The binding is a beautiful, glossy, deep red, well-crafted, wipeable (a must with kids!) and very sturdy--I expect many years of use in our family. The front and back cover are lined with a beautiful gold fleur-de-lis and cross paper. And the very first page you see upon opening the book is a prayer to the Holy Spirit. Perfect.
