May Crowning

I love the tradition of May Crowning (if you aren't Catholic, May Crowning is the tradition of honoring Mary by putting a crown of flowers on a statue of the Blessed Mother).

Today was the Kindergarten May Crowning ceremony at my daughter's school.  The older grades do the traditional "crowning" in the church, but the Kindergarten kids have a special ceremony in which they bring flowers to put in vases in front of the Mary statue in the grotto.  They all dress up and bring in a cut flower to school, then process over the grotto while singing "Oh, Mary we crown thee with flowers today/Queen of the angels/Queen of the May".  Each child puts his or her flower in the vase, and when they are done we all (kids, teachers, parents) say a decade of the rosary, followed by singing Immaculate Mary.  Here's my daughter getting ready to give Mary her flower.

It's always so sweet to see the children so reverent and to hear their little voices in song.  Don't you just love all the tradition in the Catholic faith?

OOPS!! My Date Mix-Up Faux Pas

OK--I REALLY need more sleep  or something...

Many of you may have noticed (but no one said anything--how tactful of you all!) that I reminded you all to enter the Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce Giveaway because it was the last day yesterday.  Whoops!  I inverted the giveaways on my calendar, so I reminded you about the wrong one!!  AGGHH!  Sorry about that.  Guess I need to double check my dates next time!

As you may have noticed if you saw the date under the giveaway heading, the Country Bob's giveaway actually runs through May 15th.

It is the Cascadian Farms Live Green Together giveaway that I was supposed to remind you about because IT was supposed to end yesterday.

To make ammends for any confusion I caused, I'm extending the Cascadian Farms Giveaway another 2 days, so you can enter though May 7.

Here's my pathetic excuse:  Between my in-school kids' homework, homeschooling, my precocious 2 year old, scouts, altar serving, 6 sports practices a week and an ever-growing mountain of laundry that seems to multiply like rabbits, my brain is fried.   I know some of  you have 6, 8 or 10 kids.  How in the world do you keep it all together?!?  Want to share any tips?   :D

Vote For My Husband! :)

Gevalia Coffee has a Name That Coffee contest on Facebook--the person who submits the winning name for the new coffee will win a coffee tasting party and gifts.  My husband LOVES coffee (and needs about 3 cups before he's awake!) and  he entered the contest with the name Rennaissance.

His name is at number 550 right now--somewhere in the middle of the pack, I think.

If you're on Facebook today, do my Hubby a favor and vote for Rennaissance!  He really wants to win.

Thanks!

P.S.--If you are not already a Facebook Fan, stop over to the Frugal Catholic Mommy page and "Like" us. :)

Reminder--Country Bob's Sauce Giveaway Ends Tonight

Hey everyone--just a reminder that the Country Bob's Sauce All Purpose Sauce giveaway ends tonight.  There will be TWO winners who will each receive 2 bottles, and as of this morning there aren't many entries (so the odds of winning are good)!

The sauce is kind of a cross between barbeque and steak sauce. Father's Day is next month, so you could try to win some for Dad!

Links to this and all the other current giveaways are listed on the right side of the site under the "Giveaways" heading, or you can click on the "Giveaways" tab on the top navigation bar.

Giveaway: Family Pizza Party Prize Pack

Between friends and sleepovers, scouts, sports practice, games, altar serving and music practice, sometimes it can be hard to find family time.  When we have  free time together, it's nice to be home and do something fun instead of going someplace expensive "fun".

One of our favorite family activities at home is pizza and game night.  Pillsbury has pizza crust in the refrigerated section of the grocery store--just unroll the dough and spread on a baking sheet, then add toppings and bake.  It's super fast and easy, the kids can help, and everyone can add their favorite toppings so everyone is happy (and that makes MOM happy!).

My son, for example, hates cheese.  He won't touch the stuff.  At all.  Making pizza at home is great because he can take a section of the pizza crust and make it just the way he likes it--sauce and lots of meat.  My girls like the standard cheese and pepperoni, my husband likes cheese, meat, olives and peppers, and I like meat, sauteed onions and spinach.  The one thing we agree on is the absolute void of any mushrooms--No fungus among us!  I love that we can preheat the oven, unroll two Pillsbury crusts (it's available in both thin crust, our favorite, or classic crust), and create our own section of pizza with our favorite toppings and be eating the hot pizza all within a half hour.  Then we get down to the game playing.  We're a little competitive...  :)

Hasbro and My Blog Spark sent me a fun Family Pizza Party prize pack like the one pictured below so we could have some fun, inexpensive family nights at home together (my kids LOVE the pizza plates from the prize pack). One of my readers will win a prize pack, too!  It includes a coupon for a free package of Pillsbury pizza crust, 4 fun pizza slice shaped plates and the game Pictureka! from Hasbro.

To enter to win the Family Pizza Party prize pack, just submit the form below.  One winner will be randomly chosen on May 15.

Want extra entries?  Get an extra entry for each one of these (submit the form again for each entry) :

  • Follow Frugal Catholic Mommy on Twitter
  • "Like" (become a fan) Frugal Catholic Mommy on Facebook
  • Post a link to this contest on your Facebook page

If you don't want to wait to see if you win, you can get a coupon for $.40 off two Pillsbury pizza crusts and have your own family pizza and game party!  Visit www.familygamenight.com for more info about Family Game Night and to find age appropriate games.  Have fun!

Disclosure:  Pillsbury, through My Blog Spark, sent me a  prize pack like the one shown above.  I received no other compensation.  All opinions are honest and solely my own.

Apply to Host a Houseparty

There are a bunch of great HouseParty events you can apply for now.

What is a House Party?  Well--check out the houseparty.com site and browse through the events that are listed.  These companies will select hosts  and supply them with a box of goodies to host a party at their house. It is word-of-mouth marketing for the companies, and a fun party for the host and his/her guests that usually includes samples, coupons, and freebies.

If you see an event on the Houseparty.com site that interests you, click on the "Apply" button and you will have to answer the questions in a 3 or 4 minute survey.  A certain number of those who apply will get an email a few weeks later stating that they have been selected to be party "hosts".  If you are chosen as a host, you just set the day and time of your party, invite some guests, and have fun.

I've been lucky to have been selected to host a few parties over the past few years--Gerber DHA baby food, Juicy Juice, DiGiorno Pizza and Breadsticks,  Hershey Bliss chocolates and a couple of others.  The host boxes have always been great--full of lots of great goodies to keep and give to guests.  For example, the McDonald's/Shrek Houseparty hosts will get all this:
  • 1, $75 Arch Card
  • 1, Shrek 3 DVD
  • 1, McDonald’s Stage M CD
  • 1, Shrek Forever After Movie Poster
  • 1, Shrek-themed Happy Meal box
  • 2, Shrek collectible glasses
  • 2 sets, Shrek-themed plates (each set includes 8 pieces)
  • 2 sets, Shrek-themed napkins (each set includes 8 pieces)
  • 2 sets, Shrek-themed cups (each set includes 8 pieces)
  • 2 sets, Shrek-themed invites (each set includes 8 pieces)
  • 20, McNuggets of Fun Coin Booklets
  • 2 sets of Shrek Happy Meal toys
  • 15, Shrek Happy Meal watches
  • 20, McFlurry Be Our Guest Cards
  • 15 Minute Maid Apple Juice coupons

I was looking on the House Party site today, and some of the parties that are now taking host applications are:
DiGiorno
Oscar Mayer
Apperitif French Cocktail Hour
Hasbro Game Night
Ball --Fresh Taste of Summer

If you apply, good luck!  I hope you're chosen to be a host!

Review: Just Eyewear

My husband and I both wear glasses, and we both had to update our frames this year.  I primarily wear contacts, so I  just wear my glasses at bedtime and first thing in the morning.  My husband, though, wears glasses all day.  His prescription is -7.75 (bottle caps!!!)  and he has a narrow face so it's difficult for him to find glasses that are affordable, stylish, and flattering.

I was recently given the opportunity to review a pair of glasses from www.justeyewear.com and decided on the ultimate test--my husband's prescription.

On www.justeyewear.com, you are able to search for frames with many different filters--search by gender, frame type (full rim, semi-rimless, rimless), frame material (bendable, titanium, plastic, metal),  frame size (small, medium, large)  and price (up to $93).  Or, you can click on the "Search by Size" tab and enter the specifications for arm length, bridge, frame depth/width and so on for more advanced searches.  We found it easier to find what we wanted with the "Search by Size" option.

After measuring my husbands current glasses and knowing we wanted something smaller, we searched for men, small, and plastic.  Rimless glasses don't look the best on him, so we searched for semi-rimless. He was tired of his old very classic look and wanted something a little edgier and more modern, but still classic enough for interviews (he's job hunting).

We found lots of frames that met all his criteria, and we were surprised that the prices were so reasonable.  To order, we clicked on the frames he chose, and entered the info requested about lens type (there is an extra charge for thin polycarbonate, super thin, or polarized sunglasses), coatings, tint, and prescription specifics.  We opted for the polycarbonate lenses to make the glasses a bit thinner and lighter.  The frames are black with a wide earpiece that has some thin gray pinstripes on it.  My husband thought they were a nice 1940's meets 2010 blend of styles.

After we placed the order, we received an email confirmation and could check in to see the status of the order.  We received the glasses by mail in a couple of weeks and my husband eagerly tried on the glasses for the real test. They fit well, he could see well, and he likes them.  Success on all counts! Here's Hubby striking a pose...

He's been wearing them daily now for a couple of months, and has received many compliments.  The frames seem sturdy.  So far, so good! The total for the glasses (with frames and upgraded polycarbonate lenses with a scratch-resistant coating) came to $122.  Normally his glasses cost about $300+, so this was a substantial savings, and he had a much wider selection of styles to choose from than he typically does at the eye doctor's office.

We're very satisfied, and will definitely be buying glasses from Just Eyewear again.

Disclosure:  I was given a $50 discount on the purchase of glasses in order to try out Just Eyewear.  No other compensation was received.  All opinions expressed are honest and my own (and my husband's! :)
